Understanding solar

How solar power systems work

A solar PV system is made up of panels, an inverter and a connection to your home. Here's how the sun becomes power for your home.

Panels generate DC power

Solar panels on your roof absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. Each panel is made up of photovoltaic cells that generate electricity when the sun hits them.

The inverter converts it

The inverter is the heart of your system. It converts the DC power your panels produce into the alternating current (AC) power your home uses, and manages how that power flows to your appliances and the grid.

Your home uses it first

The solar power produced is used to run your home's appliances first. Anything you don't use can be stored in a home battery or exported to the grid.

Batteries store the surplus

With battery storage, the surplus solar energy you generate during the day is stored for use at night, on cloudy days and during power outages.
